Junction Office COnversion
Junction Office Conversion
The Junction Office building was conceived as a new home for AKA new media. The building was purchased with the intent to house their business on the second floor and provide high quality office space for rent on the lower and ground floors. The building required a top to bottom rethinking in order to create contemporary space, fully accessible and built to modern energy efficiency requirements. The building is now fully insulated, windows replaced, new heating and cooling systems installed and structure adapted to modern seismic considerations. A new more generous entry lobby was relocated to the to the quiet side street, and updated to provide an elevator and a more generous access stair. New washrooms on all levels were all updated to be barrier free and inclusive. A rooftop terrace was added to create a private outdoor work and lounge space.
The interventions are subtle yet significant. The building is transformed in the manner in which it performs, but maintains the charm of the original historic building. The new entry, away from the main street, is highlighted with a bright yellow tile wall and canopy announcing the fresh revisions within and drawing the eye of passersby on Dundas. Interior renovations are simple, crisp and white, allowing the wood floors and heavy timber structure to stand out, adding texture and warmth.
